Recently, the “We can do hard things with Glennon Doyle.” podcast, the “Stronger” singer reflected on her relationship with the former talent manager. The songwriter shares two children with her ex-husband and revealed why she tried so hard to make her marriage work.

Some of the emotional lyrics on Clarkson’s new track “Mine” read: “I can’t believe I stayed as long as I did.” While her post-breakup song didn’t shed much light on what the Fort Worth native means, the pop star told fans the truth behind her words on the June 12 episode of Doyle’s podcast.

The winner of the first season of “American Idol” said his decision to stay married was influenced by his “ego” and the belief that he could solve the former couple’s problems. In the words of the TV personality:

“When you’re in it… I feel like I can do it. I can handle so much. I can control my actions. I can control my reactions. I can do this, I can reach this person, and I can cross over. And it’s going to be a little bit of your ego that gets in the way.”

Apart from her “ego”, the 41-year-old wanted to create a different kind of narrative for her two children. The Underneath the Tree singer was forced to grow up with divorced parents at a young age, an emotional turmoil she never wanted her children to experience.

“To be honest, we don’t want to do what we’ve seen,” the doting parent admitted, adding that while she wanted to protect her children, her heart must be important.

The blonde beauty admitted she became “selfish” when she could no longer cope with her “restrictive” marriage to Blackstock. But the decision to leave was a complicated process for the four-time AMA winner.

“You never think about yourself, and that was honestly sometimes very important for me to be selfish, because I’m never, rarely selfish,” the 41-year-old explained. “Since I was a child, it was in me to have a servant’s heart.” It’s hard to accept that and say, ‘I need this.'”

After accepting that he needed a divorce, the “Catch My Breath” artist filed for separation in 2020, ending his nearly seven-year marriage to Blackstock. Looking back, the Fort Worth native has no regrets about discovering a better version of herself after the breakup.

“I can say that (after the divorce) I am a much better mother. Because I think that if you’re honest with yourself, you’ll be able to be honest with others too,” gushed the blonde beauty.

The Billboard Powerhouse Award winner revealed that she experienced her first chemistry with Blackstock

Weeks earlier, the “Since U Been Gone” singer opened up about her post-breakup LP and how her ex-husband inspired the title. According to the 41-year-old, her upcoming tenth studio album ‘Chemistry’ was about her relationship with the talent mogul.

“I never really connected before my ex-husband. And I’ve never connected with anyone like that. I never felt that way,” the host admitted, citing Blackstock as the first person she felt a unique connection with.

“That kind of chemical… that level of chemical reaction, I’ve just never felt that, and I just remember when we first met, I was like, ‘Wow. I just felt something,” the mother-of-two continued, before noting that chemistry can be a blessing or a bad decision.

The three-time Grammy winner explained that the bad chemistry is not the fault of those involved. Instead, the host blamed the environment of their relationship. In Clarkson’s words:

“It can get really bad, chemistry.” You can have amazing chemistry with someone you really shouldn’t be with, you know. Not the person who is good or bad, whatever. It’s just not a healthy environment.”
