Tom Holland’s Apple TV+ series ‘The Crowded Room’ premieres in June
Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum also star in creator Akiva Goldsman’s series.
Tom Holland’s first tour with Apple didn’t go so well, but two years after “Cherry,” the Spider-Man star is hoping to make a triumphant return to the streamer. The drama series “The Crowded Room,” starring Holland in his first lead role, premieres June 9 on Apple TV+.
“The Crowded Room,” by “A Beautiful Mind” Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, is inspired by — but not a direct adaptation of — Daniel Keyes’ 1981 nonfiction book, “The Minds of Billy Milligan.” Milligan, who died in 2014, was arrested on three counts of rape on the campus of Ohio State University in 1975, but was released after being diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, making him the first person to be exonerated.
The show differs from the source material in that it follows the fictional Danny Sullivan (played by Holland) who is arrested in 1979 for his involvement in a shooting in New York City. As Danny is interviewed by Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried, returning to TV after her Emmy-winning “The Dropout”), the show flashes back to the highlights of his life and reveals what shaped him into who he is. Emmy Rossum plays Danny’s mother, and other cast members include Sasha Lane, Will Chase and Lior Raz; Jason Isaacs, Christopher Abbott, Thomas Sadoski and Zachary Golinger guest star.
“The Crowded Room” was previously described as an anthology series, with possible future seasons dealing with different stories of people suffering from mental illness. Apple’s announcement of the premiere date referred to the project as a limited series, so it’s unclear if there are any plans for future seasons.
Apple Studios is producing “The Crowded Room” in association with New Regency. Goldsman executive produces through his Weed Road Productions banner, and other executive producers include Alexandra Milchan at EMJAG Productions and Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer at New Regency. Kornel Mundruczo, who directed the pilot and several other episodes, is also an executive producer.
Three episodes of “The Crowded Room” debuted on Apple TV+ on June 9th, with new episodes each week until July 28th. Along with the premiere date, Apple also released some first-look photos of “The Crowded Room”; check them out below.
