Disney recently announced that Splash Mountain at Disneyland Park will close on May 31, 2023, allowing the Parks to begin the next phase of development for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the new attraction that will replace Splash Mountain. This means yesterday, May 30, was Splash Mountain’s last day of operation.

Splash Mountain has been a Disney Parks attraction for years and is based on the movie “Song of the South,” which is extremely controversial as many consider it racist. The 1946 film mixes live action and animation, featuring an older African-American plantation worker, Uncle Remus, who tells stories to a young white boy. Groups including the NAACP protested the film’s initial release.

Inside Splash Mountain, guests can see many of the Song of the South characters, including Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Fox, and Br’er Bear. Disneyland’s official website describes the ride as follows: “Hop into a hollow log and float through a colorful bay as you follow the happy Br’er Rabbit to his ‘laughing place.’ But be warned: Br’er Bear and Br’er Fox are in hot pursuit of this wayward rabbit.

The website also states, “Slide past over 100 talking, singing, story-telling Audio-Animatronics who inhabit Splash Mountain and offer their own slice of their home culture. Sing along to classic Disney lyrics, including “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah.” Then get ready for the grand finale – this musical ride ends with an exciting 5-story splash!

As expected, wait times at Splash Mountain have increased dramatically in recent weeks as many people try to get in one last ride before the ride is consigned to history forever. Yesterday the wait time was incredibly long as it was the last day to experience the attraction.

Splash Mountain is closing for good as the Walt Disney Company pushes for more admissions. The tour is relaunched as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a new attraction based on the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog” starring Anika Noni Rose (Tiana), Jennifer Cody (Charlotte “Lottie” La Bouff), Jim Cummings (Ray), John Goodman (“Big Daddy” La Bouff), Keith David (Dr. Facilier), Bruno Campos (Prince Naveen), Michael Leon Wooley (Louis), Jenifer Lewis (Mama Odie), Terrence Howard (James) and Oprah Winfrey (Eudora).

According to Disney, the story of the new attraction continues after the film’s final kiss, as guests join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure, “with some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for the first film. Mardi Gras performance.”

Fans will see many beloved characters from the 2009 film, including Tiana, Tiana’s mother, Eudora, Tiana’s love interest, Prince Naveen, and the iconic trumpeter alligator, Louis. “Walt Disney Imagineering Creates Original Next-Chapter Story for Tiana” Disney Parks previously announced. “Along the line of attractions, guests will discover that it continues to grow with Tiana’s Foods, an employee-owned cooperative. Combining her talents with those of the local community, Tiana transformed an aging salt mine and built a beloved brand.”

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will open sometime in 2024 at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California.
