Robert De Niro and Tiffany Chen first met on the set of 2015’s ‘The Intern’, but their story seamlessly transitioned them from working colleagues to a very loving couple.
In a recent interview, Chen, a trained martial arts instructor, shared that their relationship started strictly professionally during filming. However, their relationship evolved organically into a romantic partnership over several years.
“When we were working, it was just work,” Chen revealed on CBS Mornings with Gayle King on Friday. Page six. “And then we got back in touch a couple of years later and I was like, ‘Oh, I think we’re going to get along, and I think we really are going to get along.’
In the film, De Niro played the character of Ben Whittaker, an elderly widower who decides to rejoin the workforce as a senior intern at a fashion website. During the filming of “The Intern,” De Niro was still in a relationship with his second wife, Grace Hightower. However, their marriage ended in 2018.
In a delightful turn of events, the “Taxi Driver” actor and Chen quietly welcomed their first child together, a daughter, on April 6. The news came to light when a reporter called De Niro a “father of six”. which the Oscar winner quickly corrected, stating: “Actually seven. I recently gave birth.”
A few weeks later, on CBS Mornings, Gayle King revealed the name and first photo of their daughter Gia on behalf of De Niro and Chen. “They both wanted this baby,” King shared, expressing their overwhelming joy, adding, “They’re over the moon. They were brought here with love. He’s very upset about it.”
Tiffany Chen was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy
During an appearance on “CBS Mornings” with King on Friday, Chen shared her experience of being diagnosed with Bell’s palsy after giving birth. She explained that shortly after leaving the hospital with her daughter Gia in April, she began experiencing unusual sensations in her tongue, such as tingling and numbness.
Describing the feeling, Chen recalled, “My face felt strange. It was as if everything had started to fall apart by itself. It was as if my face had melted by itself. She continued: “Then a week after giving birth, that’s when it all hit,” adding that she started to “slur” her speech and “couldn’t eat.”
Worried, the martial arts instructor returned to the hospital, where he had completely lost facial function upon arrival. After a medical examination, Chen was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a condition characterized by muscle weakness on one side of the face.
Robert De Niro was ‘very supportive’ after his diagnosis
He fondly recalled De Niro’s words of reassurance as he tried to downplay the noticeable changes in his appearance, declaring that he “didn’t see a difference, didn’t see a change.”
He added: “He was like, ‘No. … You look good.’ He says, “Perhaps you look a little stern.” And I’m like, “Really?” My whole face melted into itself. But it was very strong, very supportive.”
In addition to his successful acting career, De Niro is a loving father to his children from various relationships. In addition to Gia and Chen, the actor has two children, Drena, 51, and Raphael, 46, with Diahnne Abbott, and twins Aaron and Julian, 27, with Toukie Smith. He is also the proud father of Elliot, 25, and Helen, 11, whom he shares with Hightower.
