The spy series will premiere on June 21 on Disney+.
After years on the sidelines as the leader of the Avengers, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is finally stepping into the spotlight.
Fury will play a central role in the upcoming “Secret Invasion,” one of the most anticipated Marvel television events in recent memory. The limited series picks up where “WandaVision” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” left off, with the shape-shifting Skrull teaming up with allies from his recently-destroyed home planet in an attempt to take over Earth.
In the series, in addition to Jackson, Don Cheadle, Martin Freeman and Cobie Smulders will reprise their roles from previous Marvel films. Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir also appear. The series was created by Kyle Bradstreet, who adapted it from an acclaimed 2008 comic book arc written by Brian Michael Bendis.
“Secret Invasion” is a six-episode limited series that appears to tell a unique story that fits within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio has had great success with this style of narrative storytelling in projects like “WandaVision,” but its television strategy may soon change. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently explained that he hopes to steer future television projects in a more episodic direction, which could result in fewer series like “Secret Invasion.”
“So now — and I think you’re seeing this not only in our shows, but in a lot of other shows — you’re starting to see the fun of a self-contained, episodic story every week. We’re going to experiment with that in some of the next things,” Feige said. “Cliffhangers are great and I love watching a show where you have to go to bed, but when you see the cliffhanger, you just have to watch the next episode. You definitely want to engage people. But I’m a big “Star Trek” fan, and I still find it comforting to watch the beginning and end of an episode of “Next Gen.” So I think we will continue to experiment with that.”
