Scream VI debuts on PVOD and Paramount+, streaming may take over
Netflix seems to be enjoying the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” effect, with five animated titles in the top 10.
Paramount+ chooses to stream ‘Scream VI’ 45 days after its theatrical release. It coincides with the debut of PVOD – but that means streaming takes priority.
PVOD revenue usually precedes streaming placement. Universal, which makes most movies available on PVOD after three weekends (except for hits like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which must wait at least 31 days), places titles on Peacock after 45 days -you. Warner Bros. Discovery has offered PVOD for “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” to debut in theaters after 21 days, but Max will have to wait two months.
As a result, the PVOD debut of “Scream VI” was muted. Instead of showing strong overall, it’s #1 on Vudu (which ranks by revenue), but currently #7 and #8 on transaction-based iTunes and Google Play. It debuted at #2 on iTunes, but quickly dropped, perhaps with the rise of streaming awareness.
The not-yet-streamed “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (both Disney) took the top spot (iTunes with “The Way of Water” and Google Play with “Quantumania”) . The two titles rotated on both sides throughout the week; “Quantumania” topped the charts everywhere in its first week.
Universal’s “Renfield” debuts this week, almost certain to be boosted by its Nicolas Cage starrer at home. TBD is “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) or “Air” (MGM). Technically, we can see “SMB” as early as this weekend, but there is no precedent for a domestic debut while a film is still performing at such a high level.
“Scream VI,” “The Way of Water,” and “Quantumania” are available for $19.99, as are three of the other four titles that could make it to all four lists (“Creed III,” “65,” and “Shazam”). . The other title, A Man Called Otto, has been available since late February and is now $5.99.
Not much changes this week. “Moment of Contact” (1091), a 1996 documentary about a supposed alien encounter in Brazil, is No. 4 on iTunes at $3.99.
Once again, Netflix viewers were quick to respond to an unfamiliar promotional title. Netflix’s French original “AKA” (available in English and with original French subtitles), about a special ops infiltrating a criminal gang, was an immediate number one when it was released over the weekend.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love”

It replaced “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” which fell to #2. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” another Netflix original, remains in the top three. By the way, animation rules — five of the site’s top 10 titles, led by “The Lorax” at No. 4, come from this format. Does the “SMB” punch rub?
