‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 3 Trailer: Meryl Streep Joins
Streep joins series stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin in the whodunit series.
Meryl Streep takes on her most difficult role to date: she plays an actress.
The Oscar winner makes his meta-role debut on Hulu with Season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building,” joining stars Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez as part of the latest mystery about the residents of Arconia. As Season 2 ended, Oliver (Short) is directing his return to Broadway, with Streep playing an actress in the show alongside Paul Rudd, whose opening night death was part of the Season 2 cliffhanger finale.
“Who are we without murder?” Mabel (Gomez) says in the trailer for the new season.
The “Just Murders in the Building” cast revealed that Streep joined in January 2023, and Gomez shared a TikTok video of Streep on set. “What are we filming? Season 3! The band is back. Can it honestly get any better? Oh wait!” Gomez said before panning for Rudd to sit next to Martin during the production.
“Well, I think it could be a little bit better,” Rudd said in the video. Streep then pops up behind Martin and Gomez and says, “Steve, do you want this pillow?”
Streep previously appeared in Season 2 of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” the limited series “Angels in America,” and the anthology show “Extrapolations” will star Tobey Maguire, Eliza Gonzalez, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, Murray Bartlett, Heather Graham and Marion Cotillard. Created by Scott Z. Burns for Apple TV+, “Extrapolations” explores the range of climate change impacts through interconnected stories.
The trailer for “Just Murders in the Building” season 3 debuted on March 12, ahead of the 95th Academy Awards.
As IndieWire’s Ben Travers praised the series for “strengthening new arcs” through its supporting stars in the show’s “heavily meta” comedy, Streep’s casting as a respected actress brings a new layer of meta-ness.
“Respectful jokes about how hard it can be to pull off a successful sequel to acknowledge the obvious smoothness and hopefully forgive some,” Travers wrote in his Season 2 synopsis.
In the first two seasons of the series, Tina Fey, Cara Delevingne, Amy Ryan, Sting, Nathan Lane, Michael Rapaport and Amy Schumer were among the star ensemble cast.
“Only Murders in the Building” comes from co-creators and writers Steve Martin and John Hoffman (“Grace & Frankie,” “Looking”). Martin and Hoffman executive produce with Martin Short, Selena Gomez, “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal. The series is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
“Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 will debut at a later date.
