Michelle Yeoh has been honored with the Kering Women in Motion Award at Cannes 2023
The Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will be celebrated at the 2023 film festival this May.
Michelle Yeoh is officially the recipient of the 2023 Kering Women in Motion Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Everything Everywhere All at Once celebrates women in cinema at the Oscar-winning annual Women in Motion Dinner. Since the start of the festival in 2015, the program has been rewarding and highlighting the creativity and unique contribution of women in culture and the arts, whose work contributes to transforming our view of the world. Past recipients include Jane Fonda, Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Isabelle Huppert, Patty Jenkins, Gong Li, Salma Hayek and Viola Davis.
“I was very moved to receive this award. I believe that times are changing; public awareness has certainly increased in recent years,” Yeoh said in a press statement. “It’s vital that women in front of and behind the camera continue to play roles and tell stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of the world.”
Malaysian-born actress and producer Yeoh made history as the first Asian woman to win the best actress category at the Oscars. Yeoh also won a Golden Globe and SAG Award for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
“Through her iconic roles, Michelle Yeoh has managed to defy all stereotypes,” said Kering Chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault. “Together with the Cannes Film Festival, we wanted to recognize his significant contribution to the art of cinema and his ability to inspire the talent of future generations. It was an obvious choice to present her with the Women In Motion Award.”
Cannes Festival Director Thierry Frémaux added: “We are delighted to honor Michelle Yeoh, an actress who is passionately committed to her films and has made her mark on the industry in so many different ways, and who is delighted to have in 2002 could welcome him to the jury of the Cannes Festival. Throughout his career, he has relentlessly explored new possibilities – to the point that it has become his trademark for a large international audience. The awards he has received are simply the inevitable consequences of this exceptional journey.”
Cannes Film Festival President Iris Knobloch said: “I am delighted and proud to celebrate the contribution of women to the film industry with Kering. For the past nine years, Women In Motion has highlighted figures who have played a key role in changing the way women are represented in culture and the arts. Michelle Yeoh is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding examples of this commitment.”
The 2023 Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16 to May 27.
