“Mafia Mamma” trailer: Toni Collette inherits a mafia organization
Monica Bellucci also stars in the film being made in Italy.
“Under the Tuscan Sun” meets “The Godfather” in the latest comedy from multi-hyphenate Toni Collette.
The Hereditary star plays an insecure American who inherits his grandfather’s Italian mafia empire in Maffia Mamma, directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Guided by the company’s trusted advisor (Monica Bellucci), Collette gleefully defies everyone’s expectations, including her own, as the new head of the family business.
Also starring Giulio Corso, Francesco Mastroianni, Alfonso Perugini, Sophia Nomvete, Eduardo Scarpetta, Tim Daish and Tommy Rodger.
Hardwicke (“Twilight,” “Thirteen”) directs from a screenplay by Michael J. Feldman and Debbie Jhoon. Collette stars alongside Christopher Simon and Amanda Sthers.
Hardwicke previously told IndieWire’s Kate Erbland that she strives to highlight “complex female characters” on screen.
“I think as women we want to see someone who takes charge of their lives and does everything to escape, fight back, fight the system, fight all the men staring at her, all the time, male gazes putting their hands on her neck and they are forced to do things,” said the “Miss Bala” director. “I hope we can make more films with strong female characters. And this is a key word, complex female characters who go through a lot in their lives and have rich lives. I’m happy to be included in the category of people who make films like this, and really we just want to keep going.”
Up next, Hardwicke is directing “Heathen,” a film about a female Viking based on the 2017 comic book series of the same name. “Heathen” is written by Stephanie Sanditz (“The High Life”) and Kerry Williamson (“What Happened to Monday”).
Meanwhile, “Mafia Mamma” star Collette stars in Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming sci-fi adaptation “Mickey 17” with Robert Pattinson. Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo and I Wanna Dance With Somebody breakout Naomi Ackie round out the sci-fi thriller, which is produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi at Kate Street Picture Company and directed by Bong at Offscreen, Inc. transparent.
“Mafia Mamma” opens in theaters on Bleecker Street on April 14.
