Lance Reddick: Ian McShane’s ‘John Wick’ Character Is Like a ‘Brother’

“One of us saved each other’s lives,” Reddick said of Charon and McShane’s Winston.

Lance Reddick detailed the story of his ‘John Wick’ character Charon in one of his final interviews.

The late “The Wire” alum died on March 17 of unknown causes. In a new one Screen Rant In an interview released a day before his death, Reddick revealed how the fourth “John Wick” movie deepened Charon’s concierge relationship with Continental hotel manager Winston, played by Ian McShane.

“We talked about it anyway, and we got a backstory that was very similar since we talked about it,” Reddick said as he created a backstory alongside McShane. “But I think we’ve known each other for decades; He probably met when he was in Africa doing MI6 work and I was a teenager, not in a very good position. And one of us saved each other’s lives. Then he took me under his wing and I’ve been with him ever since.

Reddick said, “For me, not only do I feel like I owe him my life, but he’s my brother.”

“John Wick: Chapter 4” opens in theaters on March 24. Reddick has been confirmed to reprise her role as Charon in the “Ballerina” prequel alongside McShane, Keanu Reeves and franchise newcomer Ana de Armas.

Reddick said Vulture that Charon’s character was inspired by Alfred from “Batman” and Hector Elizondo from “Pretty Woman”.

“He doesn’t speak so much, but he has a big presence, and I had to find a way to capture that,” Reddick said in 2021. “So I started with a few acts that I had in mind… There was an elegance to it.”

Reddick added that co-star Reeves wrote him a note “thanking me for what I brought to the character in these movies,” adding, “I’ll never forget it. I’m going to cry now.”

Reddick’s filmography includes “The Wire,” “Oz,” “Lost,” as well as “Resident Evil” and “Corporate.” He appeared in all four “John Wick” movies.

IndieWire’s review of “John Wick: Chapter 4” called the film one of the best action films of the decade. Director Chad Stahelski said recently The Hollywood Reporter that the “John Wick” movie franchise starring Reeves is about to take a “rest.”

“In our minds, we’re done with Keanu for now. We’re going to give John Wick a break, Stahelski said. “I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes rough, then we spend a minute. “Wick always gets the latest release date in Japan for some strange reason. It’s always three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the film in September. Keanu and I will make the long drive to Tokyo, sit in the Scotch bar at the Imperial Hotel and ask, “What do you think?” We’ll have a couple of 20-year-old whiskeys and write some ideas on napkins. If these ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”
