Kumail Nanjiani and Mandy Moore to Star in New ‘Insidious’ Spinoff

A new spinoff of the popular horror film franchise, ‘Insidious’, is in the works, starring the Oscar nominee. Kumail Nanjiani (“Forever,” “The Big Sick”) and Emmy-nominated actress Mandy Moore, per Deadline. The new spinoff is titled “Thread: An Insidious Tale” and will be directed by Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight,” “Mortal Kombat 2”).

Slater is directing the project from his own script. The film hails from Screen Gems, Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner. The “Insidious” franchise returns to theaters later this year with the release of “Insidious: The Red Door” in July.

“The Red Door” stars the cast of the original film reprising their roles for the upcoming sequel, including Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins and Line Shayne. Wilson is directing the sequel from a script by Scott Teems.

“Thread” will be the sixth film in the film series, which features everyday people clashing with evil, demonic forces. Deadline reports that “Thread” will be an “offshoot” of the franchise, rather than a continuation of the current series. The story follows a husband and wife, portrayed by Nanjiani and Moore, who enlist the help of magic to travel back in time to prevent the death of their little girl. However, magic has serious consequences.

The franchise has been a moneymaker, with the first four films grossing more than $542 million worldwide since “Insidious” debuted in 2010. Considering “Insidious: Chapter 3” and “Insidious: The Last Key” only cost $10-$11. million, the films are extremely profitable.

Moore recently starred in six seasons of NBC’s acclaimed series, “This Is Us.” He recently finished the second season of the Peacock anthology series, “Dr. Death”, against Edgar Ramirez. Another project on his plate is the upcoming Hulu series “Twin Flames,” based on the Wondery podcast, which he will executive produce.

In 2019, the actor was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work in ‘The Big Sick’. Twilight Zone.”

“Thread: An Insidious Tale” does not yet have a release date. It may take some time to get into production as the entertainment industry is currently facing a Writers Guild of America (WGA) labor strike. In addition, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has yet to sign new contracts with the actors’ and directors’ guilds, and the deadline for signing new contracts is fast approaching. If AMPTP does not sign a new contract with SAG-AFTRA and the DGA by June 30, Hollywood actors and directors may join the writers.
