Jonathan Majors almost walked out of the Marvel convention
Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have looked very different if the Majors hadn’t been left out.
Kevin Feige and his team are building Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe around Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror.
Majors plays the villain in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” before starring in the upcoming “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” The villain is quickly becoming a fan favorite, but many comic book fans may be shocked to learn how close the casting came to failure. In a new interview with him Vanity Fairstar revealed that he came very close to walking out of his first meeting with Marvel before it even started.
“I hope this doesn’t bite my ass, but I walked out of my Marvel General (meeting),” Majors said. “That was a long time ago. I’ve just come out of drama school and I’m running around town and sitting in the office. I grew up in a very special way and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. So I went in there and they were just busy. And I said, “I should be here, right?” It got long and I said, “I’m just going. This is good. I’m just going.”
Luckily for Majors and Marvel fans everywhere, casting director Sarah Finn met her just in time.
“And I got to the door, but then they said Sarah Finn was coming,” she said. “We went into the room and talked. We had this great conversation. I think the Kang chat was three years later. And now there is no excitement, especially because of who Kang is. When I said yes, we got the whole picture, and what is being made now is unified.”
Although it took three more years for Majors to land the role of Kang, his co-stars certainly think it was worth the wait. In a recent interview with IndieWire’s Kate Erbland, Quantumania director Peyton Reed heaped praise on the actor.
“Of course, casting Jonathan Majors was a dream come true,” Reed said. “I’ve seen everything Jonathan has ever done and I’m a huge admirer of him as an actor and as a human being. … Jonathan is the real deal. I think he’s the most exciting actor of his generation.”
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is now playing in theaters.
