Jonathan Groff guest stars as “Mysterious” on Doctor Who

Award-winning actor and Disney Legend Jonathan Groff (“Frozen,” “The Matrix Resurrections”) will board the Tardis in the upcoming new season of the long-running classic sci-fi television series “Doctor Who.” According to the BBC, Groff will make a “mysterious and exciting guest appearance” in the new season.

Groff voices Kristoff Bjorgman in Disney’s famous “Frozen” animated characters and spinoffs. She broke out as Jessie on the hit television series ‘Glee’. He also played Holden Ford in the critically acclaimed Netflix television series ‘Mindhunter’. He recently appeared in the hit film Knock at the Cabin directed by M. Night Shyamalan and played the role of Agent Smith in ‘The Matrix Resurrections’.

Groff also has a very successful Broadway career. He received a Tony Award and a Primetime Emmy Award III. For his role as King George in Hamilton. The Primetime Emmy Award went to a live stage recording of the show’s performance, which is available on Disney+.

Groff’s role in “Doctor Who” is unknown, but he is said to be a “key role” in the iconic television series. Commenting on the news, Groff said in a press release: “I’m so excited to step inside the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!”

Meanwhile, series showrunner Russel T. Davies added: β€œIt’s an incredible coup and a great honor to have such a huge star on our set. So strap on your space boots; this is going to be gorgeous!”

Groff’s casting in the series and his experience with Disney are fitting considering the upcoming new era of Doctor Who, which will see the series broadcast around the world via Disney+. As previously reported by The Blast, the sci-fi show will begin airing on Disney+ later this year, while it will continue to air on the BBC in the UK and Ireland.

First, “Doctor Who” returns in November 2023, starting with three new special episodes featuring David Tennant returning as the Doctor. After the Doctor’s latest regeneration, the time-traveling Gallifreyan took the form of a familiar face, that of The Tenth Doctor (Tennant). The new iteration of The Doctor, dubbed The Fourteenth Doctor, will be reunited with his former companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) in the following special episodes, including a 60th anniversary special. Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother,” “The Smurfs”) will also appear in the anniversary special as a villain.

Ncuti Gatwa will take on the role of The Fifteenth Doctor in his first episode, which will be screened during the ‘holiday period’ later this year. Groff is expected to appear in the new season. Season 14 also sees Yasmin Finney join the cast as Rose.

Special episodes of “Doctor Who,” featuring Tennant’s return as The Doctor, will air in late November on Disney+ in the United States and the BBC in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
