James Gunn is directing his ‘Superman’ movie
Gunn was previously announced as the writer for the film, which is about a young Superman’s start as a hero.
James Gunn directs Man of Steel’s next flight path. The director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” has officially become the head of DC Studios for the film “Superman: Legacy”.
IndieWire has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.
“Superman: Legacy” was the first new feature film announced after Gunn was named co-CEO of Warner Bros. DC Studios alongside Peter Safran appeared in October and news of the project emerged in December. At the time, it was confirmed that Gunn would write the script for the film, but it was not officially announced that the filmmaker would direct the project.
According to the logline, the film will focus on a younger version of Superman’s character and tell the story of his “journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent, Smallville, Kansas. He is the epitome of truth, justice and the American way, driven by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Casting for the film version of Superman has yet to be announced. “Legacy’s” announcement was accompanied by confirmation that Henry Cavill, who has appeared in four films as the comic book hero and also starred in last year’s “Black Adam,” will not be returning to the role anytime soon.
Currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, “Legacy” will be the first film in Gunn and Safran’s revamped DC slate. The “1. “Chapter: Gods and Monsters” announced projects for the new DC Universe include films featuring characters such as Batman and Robin, Swamp Thing, Supergirl and The Authority.
Superman is the third comic book franchise Gunn has directed a feature film adaptation of, following the success of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel. Gunn directed the sequel to this film in 2017, and the space opera trilogy will be released in May with “3. will close with vol. In 2021, he also directed The Suicide Squad for DC, which received positive reviews.
Gunn spoke about the news on tweet on Wednesday, writes, “Yes, I am directing ‘Superman: Legacy,’ which will be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt said when he saw the release date he started crying. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I did not notice.”
