Jake Johnson: New girl couple Nick and Jess are still together

“I don’t think Nick or Jess would ever back out of their commitment to do this thing together,” Johnson said at SXSW 2023.

Jake Johnson has vowed that there will be no new, unexpected ending for “New Girl.”

The heartwarming finale, in which Johnson’s Nicke ended up with Zooey Deschanel’s Jess, will still hold up should there ever be a reunion or rebirth, Johnson said at a 2023 SXSW panel. The “Self Reliance” director noted that Nick and Jess will not be breaking up since fans last saw the characters in 2018.

“I think it will definitely work. I don’t think they’re going to break up,” Johnson said. “They have a child, they jump on that bed, you know him much better than I do.” I don’t think Nick or Jess would ever back out of their commitment to do this thing together.”

He continued: “Liz Merriweather has created a very optimistic show, people who are nice to each other. So if it’s true and they’re alive, they’re still all together. They are just a little fatter, except for Schmidt, except for Schmidt, his hair is also thinner… If we met, Schmidt must be there.”

Schmidt was portrayed by Max Greenfield on the FOX sitcom, which co-starred Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. The series was nominated for five Emmy Awards between 2011 and 2018 and aired on Netflix between 2013 and 2023. “New Girl” will move to Hulu and Peacock starting April 17.

Elsewhere during Monday’s SXSW keynote, Johnson said he was excited and surprised when new generations of viewers discovered “New Girl” on streaming long after it aired, noting that while many people watched the show’s pilot, and followed. In the first two seasons, a lot of the audience fell off during the sequel. But Johnson pointed out that viewers as young as 19 respond even more strongly to a show that hasn’t been on the air for five years.

But he also joked that part of the reason he wanted to make his directorial debut with “Self Reliance” rather than a show was because he really wanted to engage the audience, not have them watch and consume in the background. .

“Hey, I love ‘New Girl,’ ‘Thank you,'” Johnson said of interacting with fans. “Yeah, that’s the best, I can do laundry, you’re in the background,” he added mockingly to the audience watching the series in the background. “You’re always just a voice in the background in our house.” “Thank you, nice to see you.”

Although Jess and Nick are a beloved rom-com couple with a happy ending, they are apparently one of the few.

“The Devil Wears Prada” screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna has revealed that Anne Hathaway’s iconic character Andy Sachs would “definitely not” date Adrian Grenier’s unsupportive chef Nate if there was a sequel.

“It’s Andy and Nate.” obviously not together,” Brosh McKenna said earlier this year. “That’s all I can say.”

The director of “Your Place or Mine” noted that the “27 Dresses” couple, played by James Marsden and Katherine Heigl, would most likely go their separate ways.

– Controversially, I’m not sure Jane and Kevin from 27 dresses are still married. Just a thought,” he said Species. “I mean, there was a lot of romantic idealization — I don’t really feel like they got a chance to get to know each other. It was a big wedding. I am worried.”
