‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,’ ‘Marcel the Shell’ wins big at the Annies
Oscar front-runner “Pinocchio” won five feature awards at the 50th Annual Annie Awards.
The 50th annual Annie Awards from ASIFA-Hollywood, which recognize overall excellence and individual achievement in animation, were presented Feb. 25 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus.
Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” took home the award for best play, as well as the award for a feature film in the categories of best character animation, best direction, best music and best production design. “Marcel the Shell Shoehorned” won best independent film, co-creator Jenny Slate for best acting, and best written film.
In the TV categories, “Bob’s Burgers,” “Love Death + Robots” and “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” all won. See the full list of winners below.
The previously announced Winsor McCay Award, in recognition of lifetime or professional contributions, was presented to three recipients: Pete Docter, animation writer-director and CEO of Pixar; Evelyn Lambart (posthumous), an early associate of the National Film Board of Canada, including her significant series of shorts; and Craig McCracken, creator of the prolific, influential television series. The June Foray Award for Significant and Benevolent or Beneficial Impact went to author, historian and educator Mindy Johnson.
The Ub Iwerks Award for Technical Advancement in the Animation Industry was awarded to the Visual Effects Reference Platform, which was originally developed by Nick Cannon and Francois Chardavoine to eliminate incompatibilities between digital content creation software. John Omohundro received a certificate of merit for services to art and industry.
