Fans Call On Dwayne Johnson To Show Support
Fans have taken to social media to seek support from high-profile figures like Dwayne Johnson to amplify their pleas for aid and attention. Johnson, affectionately known as “The Rock,” has deep ties to the island with his Samoan heritage.
While he has been active in philanthropic endeavors in the past, many fans feel that his influential voice could bring much-needed national and international attention to the dire situation.
“Can you please please please bring awareness to the tragic events on Maui caused by fires?” a fan pleaded. “We need support, positive energy, prayers, money donation, anything! Please use your platform to bring awareness!”
Another fan wrote, “Don’t you have Samoan heritage? Shouldn’t you be speaking about the tragic events in Maui? Show concern and raise awareness, please.”
A third fan wrote, “So you didn’t show up to the war memorial in Maui at the shelter to support the island you live on? I’m disappointed.”
Another fan sympathized with Johnson, noting that he must be in “pain” because his connection to the “Mana” and “Ohana” is much more “immediate.”
Maui Wildfire Death Toll Climb To 93
The impact of the wildfire, which is now the deadliest US wildfire in centuries, has been felt across the island, with homes reduced to ashes, cherished landscapes transformed into charred remnants, and livelihoods forever altered. Families have been displaced, their possessions lost in the blaze, and a sense of uncertainty looms as they attempt to piece their lives back together.
Local authorities are now faced with the daunting task of assessing the full scope of the disaster. The effort to quantify the losses is just beginning, as Police Chief John Pelletier noted that search crews had covered only 3% of the search area, and the death toll climbed to 93, per NYP.
“We’ve got an area that we have to contain that is at least 5 square miles, and it is full of our loved ones,” he added, noting that the death toll is likely to grow and “none of us really know the size of it yet.”
Pelletier went on to note that identifying the deceased has been a herculean task so far because the corpse “falls apart” when picked up. However, he noted that two people have been identified so far.
Jason Momoa Calls For Tourist To Halt Travel Plans
Amid the recent tragedy, Honolulu-born actor Jason Momoa has added his voice to the plea for support, urging tourists to reconsider their travel plans to the island as resources available should be left for victims of the crisis.
Momoa, who has a deep connection to the island, took to Instagram to call upon potential visitors to temporarily halt their travel plans.
“Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now,” he wrote. “DO NOT TRAVEL TO MAUI.”
He continued, “Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply.”
“Mahalo to everyone who has donated and shown aloha to the community in this time of need,” the “Dune” actor added, noting that the “community needs time to heal, grieve and restore,” pleading for tourists not to take up “critical resources” that are “extremely limited.”
Jeff Bezos And Lauren Sanchez Open Maui Wildfire Fund
In a remarkable display of solidarity and support, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his partner Lauren Sanchez have pledged a staggering $100 million donation towards the recovery efforts in the wake of the devastating Maui Wildfire Crisis.
Their generous contribution comes as the island continues to grapple with the aftermath of the wildfire, with Sanchez noting that they were “heartbroken by what’s happening in Maui.”
Their monumental donation, announced via an Instagram statement, is intended to provide immediate and long-term relief to those affected by the crisis.
“We are thinking of all the families that have lost so much and a community that has been left devastated. The immediate needs are important, and so is the longer-term rebuilding that will have to happen — even after much of the attention has subsided,” she noted.
Sanchez added, “Jeff and I are creating a Maui Fund and are dedicating $100 million to help Maui get back on its feet now and over the coming year as the continuing needs reveal themselves.”
