‘Dead Ringers’ first look: Rachel Weisz stars in Cronenberg remake

The psychological thriller series will debut on Amazon Prime Video on April 21.

Less than a year after David Cronenberg’s “Future Crimes” made a big splash at Cannes, one of the body-horror master’s most famous films is getting the streaming TV treatment. “Dead Ringers,” a six-episode remake of the Canadian filmmaker’s 1988 film, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 21, it was announced Tuesday. Rachel Weisz stars in the series as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, two identical twin brothers who work as gynecologists and run a successful maternity clinic. The original ’80s movie featured twins Beverly and Elliot, played by Jeremy Irons. Like the film, the series explores Beverly and Elliot’s tumultuous co-dependent relationship and how the strain it causes eventually drives them both to madness. Weisz is joined by Britne Oldford, Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu and Jennifer Ehle.

The series was created and written by Alice Birch, best known for her television adaptations of “Normal People” and “Conversations for Friends,” as well as screenplays for “Lady Macbeth” and “The Wonder,” both of which she starred in. Florence Pugh. Birch is executive produced with Sean Durkin, director of “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “The Nest” and the upcoming Zac Efron film “The Iron Claw.” Durkin is directing several episodes of the series, while Karyn Kusama, Karena Evans and Lauren Wolkstein round out the series. The series is a co-production of Annapurna Television, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Amazon Studios.

“Dead Ringers” marks Weisz’s first starring role in a TV series since the 1993 BBC miniseries “Scarlet and Black,” which also starred Ewan McGregor. The British actor – and Oscar winner for 2005’s ‘The Perpetual Gardener’ – last appeared in 2021’s Marvel action film ‘Black Widow’ and is known for his work in films such as ‘The Mummy’, ‘The Boy’, “The Bourne”. Heritage’, ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’, ‘The Deep Blue Sea’, ‘The Fountain’ and ‘The Favourite’. In addition to “Dead Ringers,” Weisz also stars in Todd Solondz’s upcoming film “Love Child,” reuniting with “The Lobster” co-star Colin Farrell.
