The film will be a sequel to the 1996 film starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) directs the project from a script by Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”). Producer Frank Marshall (“Jurassic Park,” “Jurassic World,” “The Bourne Identity”) is producing the film for the Kennedy/Marshall Company banner. The original film was produced by Marshall’s wife, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

As reported by The Blast, the sequel was previously expected to feature the daughter of Hunt and Paxton’s original film character, Dr. Jo Harding, and Bill Harding, who, like her parents, will be given the storm-chasing bug. It is not yet known whether any of the original actors will appear in the sequel. The two stars of the original film, Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman, have passed away. Paxton died in 2017. Hoffman died earlier in 2014.

It seems that the new film may have changed direction. THR notes that Universal is describing “Twisters” as a “new chapter” that is not expected to bring back the original film’s cast. THR reports that the new film is “not a sequel.” It remains to be seen if this will work out, but it seems that the new film could be a reboot or remake of a franchise rather than a sequel. But if that’s the case, why call it “Twister” instead of “Twister”?

In the original film, Jo and Bill fasted through a group of devastating tornadoes as they faced off against rival storm chasers and their feelings for each other. Directed by Jan de Bont, it grossed $241 million domestically and nearly $500 million globally. Steven Spielberg executive produced the film, which was written by “Jurassic Park” author Michael Crichton.

In “Twisters,” Edgar-Jones will reportedly play a former storm chaser who turns to a desk job after a disastrous tornado encounter. However, the circumstances finally chase a storm again.

He also recently starred in last year’s “Where the Crawdads Sing,” a hit for Sony Pictures that grossed $90 million domestically and $140 million worldwide on a $24 million budget.
