Brooke Shields turned down an offer to direct ‘The Blue Lagoon’
“He wants to chat, I don’t know what.” I don’t feel like bringing it up again.
Brooke Shields revealed that she was approached by ‘Blue Lagoon’ director Randal Kleiser after the documentary ‘Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields’ aired on Hulu.
The two-part doc, which debuted at Sundance 2023, examines Shields’ early sexualization, in part in Kleiser’s 1980 film, when she was 14 years old. Kleiser, who also produced the film, reportedly called Shields after the documentary premiered.
“I saw his name on my phone and I was like, ‘What should I do?’ and I let it go to voicemail because I thought I wanted to see what the tone was,” Shields said on “The Drew Barrymore Show.”
Shields continued, “And he wants to chat, I don’t know what. I don’t feel like bringing anything up again.”
“The Blue Lagoon” stars Shields and Christopher Atkins as cousins who end up in love after their ship is shipwrecked in the South Pacific. Both leads were naked on screen.
Shields added of her career: “It was about these males having to be in a certain category in order for me to serve their story, and it was never about me. He didn’t protect me. It was fun and loving at times, but I was just there, I was a pawn, I was a piece, I was a commodity.”
The model-actress said around “Pretty Baby’s” Sundance premiere that “The Blue Lagoon” would “never” be made today. “It wouldn’t be allowed,” Shields said. “We wore little strips of clothing and my hair was stuck to my body to cover the breasts, which were otherwise very minimal. I don’t know what I was trying to hide.”
Of the off-screen production pressure, Atkins added, “They were so desperate for us to fall in love. I didn’t react well to feeling anything. I haven’t even kissed anyone at this age.”
“Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” director Lana Wilson recently said she was skeptical that Shields’ allegations of assault against the Hollywood executive in her 20s would make it into the final cut of the documentary. It remained part of the film after giving Brooke Shields the final cut.
