Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel star in David Lowery’s Mother Mary.

Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX will write and produce original songs for the pop-centric film, and Oscar winner Hathaway will play a fictional musician.

Anne Hathaway is going to be a total rock star.

After winning an Oscar for her musical turn in “Les Misérables,” Hathaway has confirmed that she will lead David Lowery’s A24 film “Mother Mary” as a fictitious musician. “I May Destroy You” Emmy winner Michaela Coel will play an iconic fashion designer who develops a relationship with Hathaway’s character.

IndieWire has confirmed that “Green Knight” and “Peter Pan and Wendy” director David Lowery will write and direct the “epic pop melodrama.” “Mother Mary” will feature original songs written and produced by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Daniel Hart composes the original score.

Writer-director Lowery, Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston will produce alongside Homebird Productions’ Jeanie Igoe and Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach of Cologne-based Augenschein Filmproduktion.

Lowery previously told IndieWire that he almost stopped filming before “The Green Knight” in 2021.

“I am not alone in the fact that 2020 has been a very existential year, and my deep thoughts throughout the summer are shared by the vast majority of the world’s population. I often found myself thinking, “Does what I do contribute to the world in any way shape or form? And if not, how can I change it?” Lowery said. “I’ve had moments where I’ve wondered, ‘Does filmmaking even matter?’ But in the end I decided that I couldn’t stop filming. And if I do that, the movies I make better will be worth it.”

“Mother Mary” is Lowery’s third A24 collaboration, following “The Green Knight” and “A Ghost Story.” A24 is handling the film’s global release. “Mother Mary” is being shot in Germany with funding from Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and DFFF.

A24 recently dominated the 2023 Oscars, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” sweeping the major categories, including Best Picture. The studio also has a number of high-profile projects in the works for 2023, including a secret film from “Waves” director Trey Shults.

“Mother Mary” star Hathaway leads the 2023 Sundance film “Eileen” and appears in Neon’s “Mother Instinct” opposite Jessica Chastain, which Hathaway called “her hardest role ever.” He also stars in Amazon Studios’ The Idea of You at the end of the year.

Coel made history as the first black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series. He appeared in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” alongside Donald Glover.

“Mother Mary” director Lowery’s “Peter Pan and Wendy” premieres on Disney+ on April 28, and the filmmaker told Collider that the film has been his “favorite” project to date.

“I think it’s personally my favorite thing I’ve ever done, and I didn’t expect it going into it, but it is,” Lowery said. “I’ve never been more in love with a movie than I am with this one. We have a few more weeks to go and I love this movie. It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever made. Ironically, it’s the most grown-up film I’ve ever made. I thought my entrance into this movie was that I had a classic case of Peter Pan syndrome. I don’t want to grow up. Who does it? And I thought I was going to like that, but when I made it and I wrote it and now I’m directing it and seeing it come to life, I realized that this is a movie about letting that go. . Whether that’s good or bad, I haven’t processed yet, but it’s the first film I’ve made from an adult perspective, if that makes sense.”
