Editor’s Note: As Emmy season progresses, IndieWire will update this page with awards editor Marcus Jones’ detailed Emmy predictions. Links to each category lead to a constantly changing list of contestants, as well as reports on which shows are playing well with voters, changes to TV Academy rules, interviews with potential candidates, etc.

State of the species

Even before the Oscars were finally handed out, the Emmys were already in first place for the wide variety of television shows that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023, and those shows are now aiming to be the Get recognition from TV Academy voters.

If it was Peak TV last year, where all the programs postponed due to the epidemic reached the peak again, then we have already approached the valley. In the ever-changing media landscape, there are many Emmy contenders that are no longer even available on their network’s streaming service. Shows that would be a jump in Emmy nominations in another year have already been canceled. Primetime network television, in particular, lacked the kind of dramatic breakthrough that would bring the awards.

Add in some big Emmy titles like “Succession,” “Better Call Saul,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry” and “Atlanta” entering their final year of competition, plus curveballs. Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series winner “The White Lotus” now competes in the drama categories, and the Variety categories have been restructured to pit “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live” against each other come face to face, and 2023 is shaping up to be a very exciting transitional Emmy race.
